Surah 1 "Al-Fatiha"
(The Opening Chapter)
1. In the Name of Allah1 , the Most Gracious 2 the Most Merciful 2.
2. Praise be to Allah, Lord 3 of the worlds4 .
3. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
4. Owner of the Day ofJudgment.
5. You alone we do worship, and Your Help we do ask.
6. Guide us to the Straight 'Path'.
7. The path of those whom You granted Your Grace, not the path of those who got your Wrath, nor those who have gone astray.
I have used the word 'Allah' throughout the whole Quran, because there is no corresponding word in English. The word Allah has neither feminine mor plural, and it has never been applied to anything other than the supreme being: The One and Only God. I use the word 'god' only where the corresponding word 'ilah' is found in the Arabic text which also refers to the false gods which they Attribute to Allah.
2. "Al-Rahman and Al-Rahim":
The Arabic words , "Al-Rahman and Al-Rahim" are translated: Most Gracious and Most Merciful , which do not give the precise meaning of Allah's Mercy; they both give some shade of "Al-Rahman and Al-Rahim". The Arabic words are more becoming to express Allah's Attributes; becouse there is no being similar to Allah. The English word Mercy implies pity , long suffering , patience and forgiveness , all of which the sinner needs. But Allah , Who is Most Merciful , bestows in abundant measure. Allah's Mercy goes before need arises. The Grace which is ever watchful flows from Allah , the Most Gracious , to all His creatures , protecting them , preserving them , guiding them and leading them to clear Light and higher life.
The Arabic word "Pabb" which is usully translated by the English word "Lord" does not give the real meaning , because the word "Rabb" in Arabic means the Cherisher , the Sustainer , the Bringer up to maturity. Al-Rabb is He, Allah , the Supreme Being Who cares for All the worlds that He has created. Therefore , throughout the whole Quran , where this word "Rabb" occurs it bears the same meanings.
4. "The Worlds":
The "Worlds" : This word is used to refer to all kinds of Allah's Creations , i.e. mankind , animals , plants , seas , heavens , mountains , etc.
